Clipping Parrot Wings Is Cruel! Here’s Why…

If you clip a parrot’s wings, it’s animal abuse! If anyone – including a veterinarian – clips parrot wings, they obviously have severely underestimated the intelligence of their birds.

Guardian’ not owner

Every bird, including small budgies and lovebirds, have the intelligence to understand windows and mirrors. Most people who defend this practice say, “It’s for the safety of the bird.”
Poppycock.
It’s for the convenience of the guardian (note the word ‘guardian’ not owner). Every bird I’ve ever had has been fully flighted within the house. When they first come it and start getting to know the rooms, I go to each and every window and mirror, and show them. I knock on the window. I hold the bird close and encourage them to tap on the window and mirror, too, so they understand it is a barrier.
What? You say you clip their wings because they are “too wild”? Yu don’t know how to handle them? Clipping wings puts extra stress on their legs, which were not designed for such pressure.  And it’s not a guarantee that they will stop trying. One man I know clipped his parakeet’s wings… the poor thing could not maneuver and ended up in a pot of boiling spaghetti sauce. Luckily he was right there and rescued her.

Anyone who is afraid to develop a relationship with their own pet has no business owning one. Sure, there are cases where you may have a bonded pair that just does not like people. Some alternatives:
  • Build them their own aviary.
  • Get a large flight cage.
  • Learn clicker and pointer training techniques and make an effort to develop communication with them!

Please, please, please avoid clipping your parrot’s wings at all costs!
We have had so many mutilated birds arrive at the parrot sanctuary, just because someone clipped them the wrong way. Not only can you hurt your pet, but you can damage them for life. If you feel you must mutilate an animal to make it your pet, you have no business owning one. That goes for all animals.
